In a day and age when municipalities and institutions are struggling to define and embrace diversity it is hard to imagine those places that decades ago said diversity was not enough. No level of diversity of race,
gender, sexual orientation, wealth and even thinking can force those that are a part of any diversity experiment to understand each other, work together and find the common ground to invest in each others success. But there was a place that demanded more. A city and school that in the late 80’s & early 90’s realized that their diversity was false advertising if they didn’t take it a step further to create community. A community willing to challenge every stereotype and prejudice on the way to creating an environment where each group was proud of who they were independently. But a community that also realized that all of their differences, when brought together, acknowledged and appreciated made them better together. This is the unique story of a place, where people from all walks of life, a multitude of interest levels come together as an innovator in developer of true community. As the nation continues to figure out how to make diversity work, this story, told through the lens of the alumni who fought the issues, illustrates how they went beyond it . Cleveland Heights High was the school and this Community known to those who loved it as nothing more than HEIGHTS located in Cleveland, Ohio.
